Getting your head around atoms can be challenging, but it is well worth it – let's start by learning how to draw an atom and label its parts.

1.
Use a pencil and a drawing compass to create a large circle in the left-hand half of your page.
2.
Then, create a circle in the center of this, and add six small circles around this one in a "flower" shape. Add a small dot to the middle of each of these small circles – these will be your protons and neutrons.
3.
Then, add three circles to the right-hand side of the main circles.
4.
Use the pencil to create three loops inside the main circle – one in the center, and the others crossing it in an "X" shape.
5.
Now add small circles to each of the loops, on the lines.
6.
With a blue pen, go over the lines of the loops, the circles on the loops, and the bottom right-hand circle.
7.
Use a red pen to outline three of the small inner circles, and the top right-hand circles.
8.
Then use a gray pen to outline the remaining three central circles, and the central one on the right-hand side.
9.
Use an eraser to remove the working lines.
10.
Use the blue pen to shade the circles on the loops, and the bottom right circle.
11.
Repeat this with the red pen, carefully shading the outlines of the shapes in red.
12.
Repeat this with the gray pencil.
13.
Use the black liner to add a small "plus" sign in the red and blue circles…
14.
And add labels to the right-hand circles – Proton, Neutron and Electron, along with the "Atom Structure" title.
Voila! You now have a basic understanding of atoms and how they work – and this is just the beginning of the potential knowledge out there, waiting to be unlocked!
The humble atom is anything but simple, and forms one of the most important aspects of our universe – literally. From your dog to your phone, your favorite ice cream to your car, the chair you are sitting on, and your own physical body, every single thing in the world consists of atoms – so it is worth knowing a little about them.
Atoms are comprised of three separate parts: protons (positive electric charge), live alongside neutrons (no electric charge) – they are "neutral". The protons and neutrons are together the nucleus. Electrons (negative electric charge) orbit the outside of the nucleus.
Other than these parts, the majority of an atom is comprised of empty space – the nucleus is super dense, and this contains most of the mass. To give a comparison, if an atom were the size of a sports arena, the nucleus would then be the size of a pea.
The atom is one of the smallest particles to make up elements, each element is made up with a different number of protons – this can be seen on the periodic table. As an example, all hydrogen atoms will contain one proton, compared to all carbon atoms which will contain 6 protons.
In some cases, matter may consist of a single type of atom – gold is a common example – well other matter is created of a number of atoms which are bonded together to form compounds – sodium chloride, or salt, is a good example of this.
Atoms are a fascinating insight into our world and learning about them helps you unlock a deeper understanding of matter, and life itself.
